Hi, I’m Dan O’Donnell.
When I first ran for Vista City Council, I made a promise: to show up, listen, and put Vista first. Not party interests. Not developer interests. Not political interests. The people of Vista first.
Four years later, that promise still guides everything I do.
I ran the first time because I believed Vista was at a turning point, and that the decisions made by our city leaders would shape the character of this community for years to come. That hasn't changed. If anything, the stakes are higher. The progress we've made is real, but it is not finished, and this is not the moment to slow down.
I have championed local control and fiscal responsibility, consistently opposing tax and fee increases while advocating for smart investments in our city's future. I have worked to make sure that every Vista resident, whether they've lived here for 30 years or just moved in down the street, has a seat at the table. I voted to add new deputies and EMTs for local public safety, supported road safety and infrastructure improvements like new streetlights and crosswalks, and worked directly with Vista Little League and Vista Unified School District to secure practice fields for our kids.
But there is more to do. We still need more housing that people can actually afford. Our parks and open spaces deserve continued investment. Our local businesses need a city government that is a partner, not an obstacle. And our residents deserve a councilmember who remains accessible, transparent, and accountable long after election day.
I am not running to hold a title. I am running because I believe that good government, government that is honest, proactive, and grounded in the real lives of real people, can make a genuine difference. I have seen it work. I want to keep building on it.
Vista has given so much to me and my family. Running again is my way of saying I am not done giving back.
About Dan
A tradition of hard work and hope for the future.
Dan's story may not have started in Vista, but it's where it truly took root.
He was raised in a working-class family in a small suburb just outside Chicago, the youngest of six children. His father came home from Vietnam, met his mother in the Midwest, and together they built something remarkable out of very little. His dad left for work every morning at 7:30 and often didn't return until 8 at night, just in time for a family dinner before his mom headed out to work the overnight shift at the Nabisco factory. They didn't have much, but they gave everything they had.
That work ethic, the kind that gets passed down not through words but through example, is the foundation of who Dan is. Their sacrifice opened doors that previous generations could only imagine: a college education at Illinois State University, a Master's of Public Administration from National University in San Diego, and a career built in service to others. Two generations of grit created possibilities that once seemed out of reach, and Dan has never forgotten that.
Those possibilities are what brought him to California, and ultimately to Vista. It's where he met Allie, where they got married, bought their first home, and where they are now raising their two young sons. Becoming a father has deepened his commitment to this community, but his drive has always been rooted in something bigger. He believes every person in Vista, whether they have a family or are just starting out, whether they are a senior who has been here for decades or a young professional planting new roots, deserves a city that works for them.
Dan O’Donnell is a husband, father, Vista City Councilmember, and Deputy Mayor committed to protecting the quality of life that makes vista such a special place to call home.
Dan and his wife, Allie, are raising their two young sons in Vista, and his work on the Council is guided by the same priorities he has as a parent: safe neighborhoods, strong parks, thriving local businesses, responsible city finances, and a community where families, seniors, and young people can build a future.
On the Council, Dan has earned a reputation as an accessible, independent, and community-focused leader who listens first and gets things done. He has hosted more town halls than any other member of the City Council and has helped deliver safer street, sidewalk and traffic improvements, expanded support for first responders, increased funding for senior services, new parkland, affordable housing policies, support for local businesses, and $5 million in state funding for a Homeless Navigation Center. Dan believes good leadership means showing up, listening to residents, and putting Vista First.
And he’s just getting started!
Dan ran the first time because he believed Vista deserved a representative who would show up and truly listen. He's running again because that belief hasn't wavered, and because the work isn't finished.
He is focused on supporting affordable housing opportunities, securing dedicated local land for baseball fields, and continuing the investments in infrastructure and public safety that have defined his first term.
The same values that shaped him, hard work, community, and the belief that people in power should use that power to lift others up, are what drive him forward every single day.
Vista is home. And Dan is committed to making sure it stays one of the best places in California to raise a family, build a business, and put down roots for generations to come.
